Perform routine grounds maintenance work at assigned school sites, assist in a variety of grounds construction
projects, and perform related duties as assigned. All of the employees in the Operations Department share a
responsibility for providing safe, clean, attractive, and functional grounds for students, staff, and visitors.

Receive general supervision from the Operations Supervisor and/or Senior Groundsworker. May exercise
functional and technical supervision over Bus Driver/Operations Service Workers and substitute grounds

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Perform all phases of routine grounds maintenance as assigned. Typical assignment includes mowing, edging,
weed control, power blowing, raking, and sweeping.
• Prune shrubs, ground cover, and trees. Cut and remove fallen trees and limbs.
• Prepare ground for planting. Typical assignment includes planting, replanting, watering, weeding, and fertilizing.
• Mix and apply pesticides, herbicides, and growth regulators.
• Take appropriate measures to control rodents.
• Maintain and prepare athletic fields. Typical assignment includes fertilizing, reseeding, resodding; marking lines,
and erecting goalposts.
• Maintain irrigation equipment by replacing sprinkler heads and repairing line breaks. Monitor system function
and program irrigation controllers.
• Load, transport, and unload risers for special events at school sites.
• Assist in a variety of grounds construction projects such as installation of new landscaping, removal and
installation of concrete, construction of retaining walls, and construction and repair of playground equipment.
• Clean and maintain school grounds and parking lot areas; pick up and dispose of trash and debris.
• Repair blacktop areas as needed by filling holes.
• Clean and clear storm drains and wash-outs.
• Clear debris from roofs, roof gutters, and downspouts.
• Report, remove, and repair safety hazards found on school grounds.
• Maintain, inspect, and make minor repairs to assigned tools and equipment.
• Observe and use safe procedures in all aspects of work.
• Receive and complete work order requests.
• Prepare written reports such as daily performance reports when required. Reconcile receipts for monthly supply
purchases against the credit card statement.
• Remove, handle, and maintain asbestos-containing materials; monitor and document waste.
• Request and order materials, equipment, and supplies needed for completion of tasks.
• Operate appropriate power and hand tools to complete assignments. Operate heavy machinery pertaining to
special projects as required.

The position requires the ability to see for purposes of operating equipment and vehicles and reading
instructions, labels and other printed matter; understand speech at normal levels in person and on the
telephone; communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person and on the
telephone; operate hand-held tools and grounds maintenance equipment, as well as heavy power driven
equipment and District vehicles with dexterity; routinely move trash, debris, equipment, and supplies weighing
up to 25 pounds, occasionally move trash, debris, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 80 pounds, and
participate with manual or mechanical assistance in moving significantly heavier trash, debris, equipment, and
The position requires the ability to work out of doors in a variety of climatic conditions and perform strenuous
physical work with strength and dexterity including bending, crawling, crouching, and kneeling at ground level,
occasionally working at heights, working in tiring and uncomfortable positions, working in confined spaces,
pushing/pulling grounds equipment, reaching in all directions, long periods of standing/walking, and, with
appropriate safety equipment, working with herbicides, pesticides, other chemicals, and asbestos-containing
materials. A physical examination to verify the ability to perform duties and to wear appropriate safety gear is
required as part of the hiring process.

Experience/Training: Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to one year of
grounds maintenance experience which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful
job performance and the completion of twelfth grade.

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California driver license.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Some knowledge of the principles, procedures, and methods used in caring
for plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, and lawns; materials and equipment used in cultivating, pruning, and caring for
plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, and lawns; specialized maintenance procedures in such areas as weed control,
blacktop and asphalt work, and sprinkler system installation; operation and maintenance requirements of a
variety of equipment and tools used in grounds maintenance, including heavy equipment; and safe work
Ability to operate a variety of power driven equipment safely with skill and independence; learn to operate
welding equipment; work independently in the absence of supervision; understand and follow oral and written
instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain
cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
